A Guide to Pearlescent Paper: Adding Shimmer to Special Occasions

Pearlescent paper has a unique, light-catching quality that elevates any project from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether you are crafting wedding invitations, luxury packaging or handmade cards, that soft metallic shimmer adds a sense of occasion that flat-colour paper simply cannot achieve.

What Makes Paper Pearlescent?

Pearlescent paper is coated with a thin layer of mica-based pigments — tiny mineral platelets that reflect and refract light, creating the characteristic soft glow. Unlike metallic foil paper (which is highly reflective and mirror-like), pearlescent stock has a subtler, silky lustre that shifts tone as the viewing angle changes. The effect is sophisticated and never garish.

Types of Pearlescent Paper We Stock

  • Stardream Pearlescent — One of the most popular pearlescent ranges in the world. Available in over 30 colours from classic Quartz (white) and Crystal (ivory) to vivid Copper, Sapphire and Ruby. Weights from 120 gsm to 285 gsm cover everything from inserts to heavy card.
  • Centura Pearlescent — A UK favourite, particularly for card making. Features a pearlescent finish on one side and a smooth white reverse, making it easy to print on the back. Available in A4 sheets and assorted packs.
  • So Silk Pearlescent — A unique range with a soft, fabric-like texture combined with a pearlescent sheen. Ideal for high-end invitations and luxury brand stationery.
  • Precious Pearlescent — Our premium range featuring deep, rich colours with intense shimmer. Perfect for statement pieces.

Choosing the Right Weight

  • 120 gsm — Information inserts, envelope liners, translucent overlay effects.
  • 170–210 gsm — General card making, belly bands, menus and programmes.
  • 250–285 gsm — Wedding invitations, business cards, luxury packaging and box-making.

Printing on Pearlescent Paper

The metallic coating interacts with ink differently from standard paper. Here are some tips:

  • Inkjet — Most pearlescent papers accept inkjet ink, but drying times are longer. Allow prints to dry fully before handling. Use the "high quality" setting for best results.
  • Laser — Laser toner fuses well to the coated surface and dries instantly. Ensure your printer can handle the paper weight (most lasers accept up to 250 gsm).
  • Foil printing — A match made in heaven. Gold foil on ivory pearlescent, or silver foil on white, produces breathtaking results.
  • Colours will shift — The pearlescent base tints printed colours slightly. A warm ivory base will warm up cool blues, for example. Always do a test print.

Creative Uses Beyond Invitations

  1. Gift tags and favour boxes — Cut pearlescent card into tags or assemble small favour boxes for a cohesive wedding look.
  2. Scrapbook accents — Use pearlescent off-cuts for matting photos or punching decorative shapes.
  3. Business cards — A pearlescent business card makes an instant impression at networking events.
  4. Certificate borders — Frame achievement certificates with a pearlescent border for an extra-special touch.
  5. Origami — Lightweight pearlescent sheets (120 gsm) fold beautifully and catch the light in paper sculptures.
